In recognition of World Mental Health Day, telecommunications company 9mobile organized an insightful virtual event titled “Navigating Mental Health in a Digital World” on X-space, emphasizing the importance of mental health, especially in the workplace. This year’s theme, “Mental Health at Work,” placed a special focus on the growing need for universal access to mental health services and support, particularly as more people grapple with the mental and emotional effects of working in today’s fast-paced, digitally driven environment.
The event featured several health professionals and mental health advocates who tackled a range of critical issues, including the persistent stigma surrounding mental health challenges and the role of social media in either enhancing or negatively affecting mental wellness. Participants were encouraged to recognize the importance of mental health as a fundamental part of their overall well-being, especially in an increasingly connected world where the boundaries between personal and professional life are often blurred.
Mental Health in a Digital World: Why the Conversation Matters
Chineze Amanfo, the PR Lead for 9mobile, spoke on behalf of the telecommunications company, expressing pride in hosting the event and its commitment to promoting mental health awareness. She highlighted how the digital world, though essential for connectivity, can also sometimes contribute to feelings of isolation and stress.
“We’re honoured to support this vital conversation,” Amanfo said. “Mental health awareness is increasingly essential in today’s digital landscape, where connectivity can sometimes mask feelings of isolation. Through platforms like X-space and beyond, 9mobile is dedicated to fostering meaningful connections and discussions.”
She also emphasized that 9mobile’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives have long focused on health, with the company making targeted efforts to address key health challenges in society. She stated that mental health is a growing area of focus for the company, given its direct impact on both individual well-being and workplace productivity.
“One of the core pillars of our CSR is health, and we have made targeted interventions in the health sector. Looking ahead, we are committed to continuing this trajectory, leveraging every opportunity to drive meaningful impact through our direct efforts,” Amanfo added.
Mental Health as a Critical Asset: Expert Insights
One of the key speakers at the event was Dr. Olalekan Makinde, a renowned consultant and expert in community and public health. He underscored the significance of mental health and urged participants to prioritize their mental well-being as much as they do their physical health.
“Health is a priceless asset, and it is one we cannot afford to take lightly,” Dr. Makinde said. He explained that in today’s fast-moving digital world, mental well-being is essential for achieving long-term success and fulfillment. He further noted that mental health forms the foundation upon which individuals build their careers, relationships, and overall happiness.
In line with the event’s theme, Dr. Makinde encouraged attendees to view mental health as a valuable resource in both their personal and professional lives, stressing the importance of managing stress, taking breaks, and seeking professional help when needed.
The Role of Social Connections in Mental Wellness
Therapist and mental health advocate, Amara Esomchi, spoke at length about the critical role of social connections in maintaining mental and emotional balance. She explained that mental health is not limited to the absence of illness but is also about achieving overall well-being that includes emotional and social health.
“It is not just about physical well-being but also mental and emotional balance,” Esomchi said. “Strong social bonds can provide support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. On the other hand, if not carefully managed, unhealthy relationships or social pressures can lead to stress and anxiety.”
She further emphasized the importance of building healthy relationships, both personally and professionally, and encouraged participants to be mindful of the impact their social environments can have on their mental health.
Addressing Stigma and Normalizing Mental Health Conversations
Dr. Alexandra Odiari, an expert in community/public health, focused his discussion on the pressing need to address the stigma that surrounds mental health issues in many parts of society. He stressed the importance of normalizing mental health discussions in order to create a more supportive and compassionate community where individuals feel comfortable seeking help.
“By normalizing conversations around mental wellness and eliminating stigmatization, we create a society where seeking help is seen as a strength, not a weakness,” Dr. Odiari explained.
He urged participants to challenge harmful stereotypes and misconceptions about mental illness and to advocate for mental health support systems in the workplace, at home, and in the wider community.
The Impact of Social Media and the Importance of Digital Hygiene
In a digital age where social media plays a huge role in daily life, Dr. Olayinka Jinunoh, a psychologist and mental health advocate, shared insights on the need for digital hygiene as a way to protect mental clarity and well-being. Dr. Jinunoh highlighted how constant engagement with social media platforms can lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout, and recommended periodic digital detoxes to help maintain mental balance.
“Constant online engagement can lead to stress, and taking intentional breaks allows the mind to reset, stay focused, and remain mentally alert,” Dr. Jinunoh said. “It is essential to find balance and practice self-care in our digital habits.”
He advised participants to be mindful of the amount of time they spend online and to set boundaries that allow them to disconnect and recharge.
9mobile’s Commitment to Mental Health Awareness
Through the event, 9mobile demonstrated its continued commitment to raising awareness about the importance of mental health in a world where digital technology increasingly influences how people live, work, and connect with others. As mental health becomes an integral part of discussions on workplace wellness and productivity, 9mobile is dedicated to fostering these crucial conversations on platforms like X-space and beyond.
The event underscored the need for businesses, communities, and individuals to actively promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and prioritize well-being in both personal and professional spaces. 9mobile remains committed to using its platform to drive positive change and ensure that mental health continues to receive the attention and care it deserves.
