The city of Kaduna is gearing up for an exhilarating showcase of athleticism and camaraderie as it prepares to host the Armed Forces Games from September 24 to 28, 2024. This prestigious event will bring together no fewer than 2,000 athletes and officials from Nigeria’s military, as they compete to secure spots on the national team for the upcoming Africa Military Games scheduled for November 18 to 30, 2024, in Abuja. The theme of this year’s games is “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” emphasizing the role of athletics in fostering unity and collaboration among African nations.

During a press briefing at the Stallion Officers’ Mess, Dalet Barracks, Kaduna, Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, the Director of Sports at the Defence Headquarters, elaborated on the significance of the Armed Forces Games. The event will feature 19 sporting events, including football, basketball, volleyball, and athletics, all designed to enhance military professionalism and promote unity among personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Marquis highlighted that this gathering is not just about competition but also about building relationships and camaraderie among military members. “The objectives of the games are to enhance military professionalism through sports, promote unity and camaraderie among military personnel, and select the best athletes to represent Nigeria at the Africa Military Games,” he stated.
Economic Boost for Kaduna
The influx of over 1,600 athletes and officials is expected to stimulate the local economy significantly. From lodging to dining and transportation, the economic impact will be felt across various sectors in Kaduna. “These athletes will engage in numerous economic activities during their stay, benefiting local businesses and the community,” Marquis added.
The games will be hosted at five key venues, including the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Murtala Square, and the Nigerian Defence Academy. Marquis expressed gratitude to Governor Uba Sani for his support in facilitating the use of these venues, underscoring the state’s commitment to the military and the event.
A Historic Location
Kaduna’s selection as the host city is rooted in its rich military history and strategic importance. Many military officers, including senior officials, have trained at the Nigerian Defence Academy and the nearby Jaji, making this event particularly meaningful. Marquis noted, “The Chief of Defence Staff, being from Kaduna State, wanted to contribute to his home state’s development through hosting the Armed Forces Games.”
