Former general Prabowo Subianto was sworn in on Sunday as Indonesia’s president, taking the helm of the world’s fourth most populous nation. At 73 years old, Prabowo, a fiery nationalist with a controversial military past, officially succeeded outgoing President Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi.
During his inauguration at the Indonesian parliament, Prabowo vowed to govern for all Indonesians, including those who did not vote for him, emphasizing his commitment to fighting corruption and upholding democracy. He reassured the nation of his dedication to Indonesia’s long-standing non-aligned foreign policy while also signaling a more assertive stance on the global stage. “We will lead the Indonesian government by prioritizing the interests of all Indonesian people,” Prabowo stated.
Prabowo’s foreign policy approach was highlighted by his visit to China immediately after his election eight months ago, followed by trips to over a dozen other countries, including Russia and Australia. In Australia, he secured a significant security agreement, reflecting his goal of strengthening Indonesia’s international relations.
Prabowo’s landslide victory in the February presidential election was bolstered by his running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the 37-year-old son of outgoing President Jokowi. After the swearing-in, Prabowo, dressed in traditional attire, addressed enthusiastic lawmakers who chanted his name. In his speech, he reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to being a “good neighbor,” asserting the country’s desire to maintain peace while protecting its sovereignty. “We don’t want to disturb other countries, but we will not let any countries disturb us,” he said.
Following the ceremony, Prabowo went to the presidential palace in Jakarta, where he shook hands with supporters and participated in a handover event with Jokowi, his former political rival. The two had faced off in two previous elections, making this transfer of power particularly significant.
In one of his first acts as president, Prabowo announced his cabinet, appointing 48 ministers to key positions. Sugiono, a senior official from Prabowo’s political party, was named foreign minister. Rosan Perkasa Roeslani returned as investment minister, while Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir retained their respective portfolios.
Prabowo’s presidency marks a new chapter for Indonesia as the nation seeks to strengthen its role on the global stage, while also addressing pressing domestic challenges such as corruption and economic growth.
