Nigerian-American racing sensation Ugo Ugochukwu has cemented his place in motorsport history by clinching the 2024 FIA Formula Regional (FR) World Cup title at the iconic 71st Macau Grand Prix. The 17-year-old dominated the challenging race, leading from start to finish for his R-ace GP team, with Olivier Goethe (MP Motorsport) and Noel León (KCMG IXO by Pinnacle Motorsport) completing the podium.
This victory makes Ugochukwu the first American driver in over 40 years to win the prestigious Macau Grand Prix, a feat that underscores his immense talent and determination.

Reflecting on his triumphant performance, Ugochukwu attributed his success to his team’s preparation and his unshakable confidence.
“I can’t describe the feeling; of course, I’m super happy,” Ugochukwu said. “It was quite a tricky race. I was pushing the whole way, but I was confident in the pace – ever since Q2, we’ve been really quick. Of course, we won the Quali race as well, but there was still one more thing to do, which was win the main race, and we managed to do it. I can’t thank the R-ace GP team enough. We had a great weekend, and yeah, I’m super happy to finally get the job done.”
Ugo Ugochukwu: A Rising Star
Born on April 23, 2007, in New York City to Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba and an American father, Ugochukwu began his motorsport journey at the tender age of seven. He quickly showed promise, winning his first championship in 2014 in the Micro ROK Cup USA.
His talent soon drew international attention as he transitioned to European karting competitions, earning runner-up finishes in the Mini ROK Cup and Mini 60 Italian Championship in 2016. The following year, Ugochukwu captured global recognition by winning the Mini X30 IAME All Star Finals and the IAME International X30 Mini Cup.
A Career Shaped by Determination
Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ugochukwu’s star continued to rise. In 2020, he became the first recruit of the McLaren Junior Driver program under McLaren F1 Racing CEO Zak Brown, highlighting his extraordinary potential.
In 2022, Ugochukwu made a seamless transition to single-seater racing, competing in the British F4 Championship with Carlin Racing. He concluded his karting career in 2021 with a runner-up finish in the OK Senior WSK Euro Series, a fitting end to a stellar karting journey.
