Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep gratitude to former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.) for secretly intervening to save his life during his imprisonment under the late General Sani Abacha’s regime. This revelation came to light during a special Christmas carol event held in Plateau State, where both statesmen were present.

During the Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos South Local Government Area, Gowon shared for the first time how he intervened on Obasanjo’s behalf. Gowon revealed that he wrote a heartfelt letter to Abacha, urging him to show clemency to Obasanjo, who had been imprisoned on charges of plotting a coup. The letter was delivered personally through Gowon’s wife, emphasizing that true leadership should be about doing good, not causing harm.
Gowon expressed his relief and gratitude that Obasanjo was eventually released after Abacha’s death in 1998 and later went on to become Nigeria’s president in 1999.

The following day, Obasanjo publicly acknowledged Gowon’s efforts, revealing that he had been unaware of the letter until the event. “I want to acknowledge my boss, General Yakubu Gowon. Yesterday, he made a revelation, and I have to thank you specifically for that. When I came out of prison, I thanked friends and supporters globally who appealed for my release. But I didn’t know you wrote a personal letter until now. I thank you.”
