A devastating accident occurred in Ebonyi State, claiming the life of a female prospective corps member who was on her way to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Afikpo North Local Government Area. The victim was among 12 prospective corps members traveling in a 14-seater bus that lost control and crashed into a parked truck.¹
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened at Amenu village in Okposi, along the Amasiri-Okiigwe route. The bus, a Toyota commercial vehicle, was traveling from Enugu to Afikpo, where the corps members were expected to undergo their three-week orientation course. Unfortunately, the female corps member succumbed to her injuries, while her colleagues and other passengers sustained various degrees of injuries.²
The victims were rescued by residents and security agencies and rushed to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) for treatment. The Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Igwe Henry, confirmed the accident, although he noted that his team did not have details of the casualties as the victims had been rescued before they arrived at the scene.
The NYSC Ebonyi State Coordinator, Foluke Oladeinde, expressed her shock and grief over the incident, stating that she was not in the right frame of mind to talk about the accident. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.
