The Kano State government has confirmed that 10 people lost their lives and properties worth over ₦11 billion were destroyed during the End Bad Governance Protest, which took place on August 1, 2024. This was revealed in the official report submitted by the Committee of Inquiry, which was set up by Governor Abba Yusuf to investigate the violent demonstration.
During the 25th Kano State Executive Council meeting at Government House, the committee’s chairman, Justice Lawan Wada (rtd.), formally presented the findings. In response, Governor Yusuf pledged to take decisive action based on the report’s recommendations, including issuing a white paper to identify those responsible for sponsoring and executing the violence.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the administration is committed to implementing the committee’s recommendations in full.
“The report confirms that 10 people lost their lives, while seven others sustained critical injuries. Additionally, public and private properties worth over ₦11 billion were destroyed,” the statement read.
Governor Yusuf assured that the committee carried out its six-month investigation independently and without government interference.
“I trust the integrity and professionalism of the committee members. They were selected on merit, and I am confident they conducted their work without bias,” he stated.
He emphasized that appropriate action would be taken to prevent future incidents of violence and destruction, stressing the importance of accountability.
Justice Wada, while presenting the report, explained that the committee visited all affected areas and engaged with key stakeholders to compile a detailed account of the protest’s impact.
As Kano State moves towards implementing the findings, all eyes will be on the government’s next steps in addressing the causes of the protest and ensuring justice for those affected.
