Feyenoord secured their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against AC Milan at San Siro, sealing a 2-1 aggregate victory over the seven-time European champions.
Julian Carranza was the hero for the Dutch side, scoring the decisive goal in the 73rd minute with a powerful header that ensured Feyenoord’s progression. His strike canceled out an early opener from former Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez, who had put Milan ahead after just 36 seconds.
Milan’s hopes took a major hit when Theo Hernandez was sent off early in the second half. The French left-back, already on a yellow card for a first-half foul, received his marching orders after being judged to have dived in the box under pressure from Givairo Read. His dismissal left Milan struggling to maintain their early dominance, allowing Feyenoord to push forward and eventually capitalize through Carranza.
The result ended Milan’s Champions League journey for the season and added pressure on manager Sergio Conceicao, as the Italian giants now face an uphill battle to qualify for next season’s tournament. They currently sit seventh in Serie A, five points behind the top four, with a game in hand.
Feyenoord will now face either Inter Milan or Arsenal in the next round as they continue their impressive European campaign.
