Renowned political scientist and former Nigerian Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, has advised President Bola Tinubu to approach dealings with newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump with caution. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Akinyemi warned against provoking Trump, whom he described as a “bully,” suggesting that Nigeria’s leadership should prioritize diplomacy over confrontation.
Akinyemi emphasized the importance of strategic patience, invoking an African proverb to underline his advice. He remarked, “If you are not strong enough to take on a bully and you confront him, you will only suffer more for it.” This approach, he argued, is essential for Nigeria to navigate potential challenges posed by Trump’s administration.
“If I were President Tinubu,” Akinyemi continued, “I would avoid antagonizing him. Even if Trump makes decisions that offend or undermine Nigeria’s interests, it’s better to address them subtly rather than through outright confrontation. There are ways to protect national interests without escalating tensions.”

Akinyemi, who previously served as Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), also expressed disappointment with Trump’s inaugural address. He described the speech as “shocking and depressing,” highlighting concerns over the tone and implications of Trump’s policies for the global community.
