Ancelotti Defends Vinicius, Criticizes Ban as Unfair

Real Madrid’s coach Carlo Ancelotti has publicly criticized the two-match suspension handed to Vinicius Junior following the Brazilian winger’s red card during Madrid’s 2-1 win against Valencia. The dismissal, stemming from a physical altercation with Valencia’s goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski, will sideline Vinicius for La Liga clashes against Las Palmas and Real Valladolid later this month. However, he remains eligible for the Spanish Super Cup, where Madrid will face Mallorca in the semi-finals.

Ancelotti expressed his frustration during a press conference in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the unfairness of the decision and highlighting the hostile environment Vinicius faces on the pitch. “Both he and I hear what happens in the stadiums, the insults… the ban is not right,” he remarked.

The controversy erupted during the match at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium, where Vinicius was subjected to jeers from the crowd. La Liga reported chants of “stupid, stupid” directed at him to Spain’s anti-violence committee. This incident is not the first time the winger has faced hostility at the Mestalla; in 2022, he confronted fans over racial abuse.

Ancelotti defended his player, dismissing claims that Vinicius provokes opponents or crowds. “I’m tired because when people talk about Vinicius provoking, they’re deflecting from the insults he receives from everyone,” the coach stated. He added that the club remains fully supportive of the talented forward, saying, “We are delighted with Vinicius in all ways.”

The debate over Vinicius’ treatment has reignited broader discussions about player abuse and officiating standards in La Liga. As Madrid prepares for its Spanish Super Cup encounter against Mallorca, the focus on Vinicius remains intense, highlighting both his crucial role for the team and the challenges he continues to face on and off the field.

Meanwhile, Barcelona takes on Athletic Bilbao in the other semi-final, setting the stage for a potentially thrilling Super Cup final.
