The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced another shift in the kick-off date for the delayed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), now set for August. The postponement aims to allow additional time for the host nations—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania—to complete necessary upgrades and renovations of their infrastructure and facilities to meet the required standards for the competition.
Originally scheduled for February 2024, the tournament will now take place in August, as CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed his satisfaction with the progress made so far. “Good progress” has been reported in the ongoing work on stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other critical facilities. Motsepe thanked the presidents of the host countries—William Ruto of Kenya, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda—for their leadership and commitment to ensuring the success of the tournament.
“I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship,” said Motsepe, praising the continued efforts in the three countries.
The 2024 CHAN, which was initially set to be held next month, is now expected to kick off in August 2025, with the exact dates to be confirmed later. In the meantime, CAF will hold the draw for the tournament in Nairobi on January 15, 2025, at 20:00 Nairobi Time. The tournament will showcase the best of African football, with teams from across the continent vying for glory in the competition.
