In a troubling development, Nigeria has recorded over 350 cholera-related deaths during the first nine months of 2024, according to the latest data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). This represents a staggering 239% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023. Between January and September, the NCDC reported 359 deaths, a significant rise from just 106 deaths in the previous year.
Surge in Suspected Cases
The cholera outbreak is not limited to fatalities alone; there has been a dramatic rise in suspected cases. The number of suspected cholera cases surged to 10,837 in 2024, up from 3,387 during the same period last year. Alarmingly, children under five years old are disproportionately affected, highlighting a vulnerable population that requires urgent attention.
Lagos Takes the Lead in Cholera Cases
Among the states, Lagos, known as Nigeria’s commercial hub, has reported the highest number of cholera cases. The increase in infections is concerning, especially in urban areas where access to clean water and sanitation is often limited.

Compounding the crisis, authorities in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria announced a cholera outbreak just last Friday. This region is already facing dire conditions due to widespread flooding, which has displaced nearly two million people. The flooding not only disrupts daily life but also severely compromises public health efforts, making it even more challenging to contain the cholera outbreak.
