As Nigeria’s journey towards qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensifies, the country’s football community remains in suspense over the Super Eagles’ prospects. Former captain of the national team and member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad, Coach Henry Nwosu, has spoken out about the crucial importance of qualification, expressing his concerns while maintaining hope for the team’s chances.
In an interview, Nwosu emphasized that missing out on the World Cup would be a massive blow to the nation. “It will be a big blow for the country because people like us will not be watching the games with all our hearts,” he said. He pointed out that such a setback could significantly impact Nigeria’s football ranking and harm the country’s reputation on the continental stage. “Other African countries will see us as an unserious nation when it comes to football,” he added, stressing the magnitude of the situation.
Despite these concerns, Nwosu remains optimistic about the Super Eagles’ ability to secure a place in the tournament. He believes that with the right preparations, the team can still qualify for the prestigious event. “I am always optimistic. I always believe in going forward. I don’t feel anything should hold me back, and that’s where I see the Super Eagles,” Nwosu remarked, indicating his faith in the team’s potential.
The former assistant coach of the 2002 World Cup squad under Coach Adegboye Onigbinde noted that Nigeria’s remaining matches are still winnable if the right players are selected and the team is adequately prepared. He also acknowledged the importance of keeping the players injury-free and in top physical condition. “We have to do our homework properly, get the right players in the right positions, and also pray that our players are injury-free and in top shape,” he advised.
Nwosu also praised the newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Eric Sekou Chelle, and expressed confidence that Chelle’s desire to prove himself would drive the team towards success. He highlighted the importance of arranging the team well in advance and maintaining a strong focus. “The new coach will want to prove himself, and that’s why Nigerians believe we must win all the remaining matches and qualify,” Nwosu said, adding that while Nigeria’s opponents will be tough, he remains hopeful they will slip up, allowing the Super Eagles to sail through.
With Nwosu’s words of encouragement, there is still a sense of hope in Nigerian football circles as the Super Eagles continue their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
