The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated, as a faction of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) suspended the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum. In his place, the party’s Treasurer, Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed, has been appointed as the new Acting National Chairman.
This development was confirmed in a statement issued by the PDP National Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, on Friday in Abuja. The statement announced the immediate appointment of Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the acting leader of the party, citing the PDP Constitution as the legal foundation for the decision.
“Following the suspension of His Excellency, Amb. Illiya Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Working Committee (NWC) has approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman,” the statement read.
The NWC emphasized that the appointment took immediate effect and was made in accordance with the provisions of the PDP’s Constitution (as amended in 2017). The decision reflects a deepening power struggle within the party’s leadership ranks.
The NWC urged all party members, leaders, and stakeholders to remain focused during this crucial period, particularly as preparations continue for the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024. This meeting is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing the ongoing leadership crisis and shaping the party’s future direction.
