David Moyes, the newly appointed head coach of Everton, expressed his eagerness to manage the club for a second time and his confidence in securing the team’s survival in the Premier League. The 61-year-old Scot, who enjoyed significant success during his first stint at Goodison Park from 2002 to 2013, including a fourth-place Premier League finish in 2005 and an FA Cup final appearance in 2009, is determined to restore Everton to stability.
The club, however, has faced challenges since Moyes left for Manchester United in 2013, struggling with relegation battles over the past few seasons. Currently, Everton sits just one point above the relegation zone, making Moyes’ return vital for the club’s future. His first match in charge will be against Aston Villa on Wednesday, where he aims to steer the team away from the threat of relegation.
Moyes acknowledged the challenging position the club finds itself in, describing the situation as needing a “bit of a sticking plaster” to halt the slide. “They want to get us back on track and we all know we need a bit of a sticking plaster at the moment, and we have to try to make that work,” Moyes said during a pre-match press conference. Despite his initial optimism about Everton’s chances earlier in the season, Moyes now faces a tough challenge and emphasized the need for collective effort to escape relegation.
He also stressed that Everton’s players need to improve their performance and score more goals if they are to maintain their Premier League status. “I believe we will be strong enough to stay away from it (relegation),” he said, though acknowledging the hard work ahead.
Moyes’ managerial career took a difficult turn after leaving Everton for Manchester United, where he was sacked after just one season. He also had short-lived spells at Real Sociedad and Sunderland before rebuilding his reputation with West Ham United. At West Ham, Moyes led the team to European qualification three times and secured the Europa Conference League title in 2023, ending a 43-year trophy drought.
Reflecting on his return to Everton, Moyes shared that he had come close to rejoining the club several times in the past. “I’ve had talks, and for whatever reason it’s fallen through,” he revealed. However, his experience at West Ham has reinvigorated his belief that returning to a former club can lead to success. “It used to be that going back was no good, but I did that at West Ham, and we went on to win a European trophy. So we’re back on the journey again.”
