Popular Nigerian On-Air Personality, Oladotun Kayode, widely known as Do2dtun, has voiced concerns over the fleeting appeal of contemporary music, attributing the trend to an oversaturated industry fueled by haste and an obsession with streaming statistics.
In his characteristic candid style, Do2dtun highlighted how the relentless pursuit of numbers has overshadowed the artistry that once defined music creation. “Most songs made in the last five years lack staying power. It’s not because they aren’t good enough, but the market is oversaturated with tracks made in haste,” he remarked.
The OAP observed that the race to gain visibility on streaming platforms has turned music into a numbers game, where quantity often trumps quality.
Compromised Artistry in the Pursuit of Streams
Do2dtun didn’t shy away from criticizing what he perceives as declining artistry in the industry. He attributed this to several factors, including a lack of dedication among some artists, reduced lyrical depth, and the prioritization of mass production over crafting memorable tunes. According to him, many recent songs fail to leave a lasting impression on listeners, contributing to what he termed a “disposable music culture.”
This perspective stands in contrast to the international acclaim Nigerian music has achieved in recent years, with global icons like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido paving the way for Afrobeat’s dominance on the world stage. Despite these achievements, Do2dtun warned that the rapid growth of the industry is leading to a saturation of content that risks diluting its value.
A Call to Protect Nigerian Music’s Legacy
Do2dtun urged stakeholders to prioritize quality and substance over sheer numbers, emphasizing the importance of preserving the rich heritage of Nigerian music. “It’s become a race to be heard—a numbers game rather than a focus on value,” he lamented, calling for a return to the depth and dedication that once defined the industry.
The OAP’s remarks are a wake-up call to artists, producers, and industry players to recalibrate their focus, ensuring that Nigerian music continues to stand the test of time while maintaining its unique identity and cultural richness.
