Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, WHO Regional Director-Elect for Africa, Passes Away

Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Regional Director-elect for Africa, has tragically passed away while receiving medical treatment in India, as confirmed by Tanzania’s parliament on Wednesday. The Tanzanian Speaker, Tulia Ackson, announced that arrangements are being made to repatriate Ndugulile’s body back to Tanzania. However, the cause of his death has not been disclosed.

In August 2024, Ndugulile was appointed to succeed Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who had served two terms as the WHO Regional Director for Africa. Ndugulile was set to assume his role in February 2025. His sudden passing has left many in the health sector and beyond deeply saddened.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed his shock and sorrow over Ndugulile’s death. On social media, Ghebreyesus posted: “Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Dr Faustine Ndugulile, @WHOAFRO Regional Director-elect. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and the parliament and people of #Tanzania.”

Dr. Ndugulile, who was a respected figure in public health, was expected to bring significant leadership to the WHO African Region, focusing on improving health systems and addressing pressing health challenges across the continent. His passing has left a void in the global health community, and tributes have poured in from around the world in honor of his contributions.
