Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki remains steadfast in his belief that his recent political fallout with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, will not impede the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) chances in the upcoming governorship election on Saturday. Despite Wike’s prior role in securing Obaseki’s victory against Adams Oshiomhole-backed Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2020 election, their relationship has soured, with Wike declaring his lack of support for Obaseki’s chosen candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
In an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obaseki addressed concerns about Wike’s stance, asserting that the electorate in Edo is sufficiently informed to make their own decisions. “He (Wike) came to get Edo people to vote for me, right? Wow! Edo people are not that dumb; they know who to vote for,” Obaseki stated confidently. He emphasized that the people of Edo do not need external influence to determine their voting preferences, insisting that they are capable of deciding their future based on their needs and aspirations.
No Regrets Over Political Fallout
Obaseki reflected on his political journey, stating that he does not regret distancing himself from certain former allies, including Oshiomhole and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. He attributed some of the discontent among politicians to his decision to utilize government funds to address the pressing needs of the populace. “Some politicians are not happy with me because I have used money from the government’s revenues to solve people’s needs,” he explained, highlighting his commitment to governance that prioritizes the welfare of the citizens.
