Ex-Lawmaker Dr. Joseph Kigbu Kidnapped by Bandits in Deadly Highway Attack

Former House of Representatives member Hon. Dr. Joseph Haruna Kigbu was kidnapped yesterday evening by suspected bandits in a violent attack that also claimed the life of his police escort. The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. along a notorious stretch of road between Nunku in Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and Gwantu in Sanga Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

How the Attack Happened

Dr. Kigbu was traveling to Jos when his convoy was ambushed by heavily armed assailants. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the attackers fired shots indiscriminately, creating panic and confusion among motorists on the highway. Despite the efforts of the police escort assigned to Dr. Kigbu, the officer was fatally shot in the gunfire as he attempted to fend off the kidnappers.

According to local villagers, the area where the attack occurred has long been plagued by criminal activity. Residents have repeatedly called attention to the dangers on this stretch of road, urging the authorities to step up security measures.

Community Alarm and Rising Insecurity

The kidnapping of a prominent figure like Dr. Kigbu and the killing of his police guard have reignited fears among residents, who have long lived under the shadow of such attacks. This incident adds to the growing list of abductions and armed robberies that have become distressingly common in the region.

Locals described the area as a “hotspot” for banditry, noting that travelers are often targeted for kidnapping, extortion, and even violence. “This road has been unsafe for years,” a local villager said. “We need the government to take this seriously and provide better security.”

Authorities Yet to Respond

Efforts to get a response from the Nasarawa State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls to the Police Public Relations Officer went unanswered. The silence from law enforcement officials has added to the frustration of residents, who feel abandoned in the face of worsening insecurity.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in the region. With Dr. Kigbu now in the hands of his captors, there are growing calls for immediate action to secure his release and prevent future attacks.

A Call for Action

The kidnapping has sparked outrage and concern among local leaders and the public. Many are calling for an increased security presence, particularly along vulnerable routes like the Nunku-Gwantu road. The community is demanding swift action from the police and other security agencies to rescue Dr. Kigbu and ensure the safety of other travelers.

The tragedy also underscores the broader insecurity issues facing Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have become a frequent occurrence. Residents hope that the government will respond decisively to protect lives and restore peace in the region.
