In a tragic turn of events in Ajowa Akoko, Ondo State, a father, Monday Elela, has admitted to killing his 14-year-old son, Tope Elela, after years of frustration over the boy’s repeated involvement in criminal activities. Describing his son as the “black sheep” of the family, Elela confessed to beating the boy, who later died from the injuries.
Elela, now in police custody, revealed during his parade by the Ondo State Police Command that Tope had a history of housebreaking, theft, and other offenses. The father said he had previously handed the boy over to Amotekun operatives and local vigilantes for disciplinary action.
According to Elela, the incident occurred after Tope escaped from Amotekun custody. In anger, Elela beat him but claimed he never intended to cause his death. The next morning, Tope was found lifeless. Overwhelmed with fear, Elela buried his son in a shallow grave under a banana tree behind their house. Both Elela and his wife were subsequently arrested by the police following the grim discovery.
The Ondo State Police Command also paraded 24 other suspects for various crimes, including cultism, murder, and theft. Among them was Olamide Ogunseyila, 28, who admitted to being a cultist, and Gbenga Bisi, who was caught with firearms and ammunition.
Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, addressed the media, confirming ongoing investigations into the case and other crimes. He assured the public of the command’s commitment to rooting out crime and ensuring justice for all victims.
This case highlights the complexities of addressing juvenile delinquency and the importance of parental guidance, societal intervention, and robust law enforcement to prevent such devastating outcomes.
