Felix Morka, National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has addressed the controversy surrounding his remarks about Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. Obi recently claimed that Morka’s comments on television led to threats against his life and his family, a claim Morka has firmly denied.
The dispute began after Obi’s New Year message, which drew criticism from Morka during an interview on Arise TV. Morka stated that Obi had “crossed the line so many times” and added, “Whatever he has coming to him, he should manage it.” Obi interpreted this as a veiled threat, citing subsequent messages that included threats to his life and those close to him.
Responding on the same platform, Morka clarified that his words were not intended as a threat but were a direct rebuttal to Obi’s remarks, which he called misleading. Morka explained that his comment referred to Obi’s tendency to “cross several lines of truth” and his deserving of labels such as “prophet of doom” or “voodoo economist.”
“If Peter Obi was called a prophet of doom or a voodoo economist, he has it coming to him because he speaks a lot of falsehood. That’s the end of the story,” Morka said. He emphasized that his comments were aimed at Obi’s rhetoric, not his personal safety.
Challenging Obi’s claims, Morka urged him to provide evidence of the alleged threats. “He who alleges must prove. If Peter Obi says anyone threatened him, he must present evidence. For someone of his standing, this shouldn’t be a matter of speculation; it should involve law enforcement,” Morka stated.
Morka reiterated that he never issued any threats against Obi and suggested that Obi’s allegations were unfounded. Instead, he maintained that his comments merely criticized Obi’s political and economic narratives, which he believes are misleading.
This exchange adds another layer of tension between the APC and Labour Party amid an already polarized political climate, underscoring the persistent divisions in Nigeria’s political discourse.
