In a tragic turn of events, a football-related argument at Kyobugombe Trading Centre in Western Uganda led to the death of a 22-year-old Manchester United fan, Benjamin Okello. The altercation occurred on Sunday, October 27th, following a heated exchange between Okello and an Arsenal fan, identified as Onan, over a 2-2 draw between Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
According to witnesses, Okello began celebrating in the video hall where fans had gathered to watch the match, especially when Liverpool’s Mo Salah scored a late goal, tying the game. In a lighthearted act, Okello reportedly threw popcorn at Onan, who was rooting for Arsenal. However, the seemingly innocent action ignited a scuffle, which intensified after the match ended. The confrontation escalated when Onan allegedly picked up a stick and struck Okello, leading to severe injuries.
The details were confirmed by Mr. Edmond Tumwesigye, Chairperson of Kaharo Sub County, who received word of the tragic fight early Monday. After the altercation, Okello was rushed to Bukinda Health Centre and later transferred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Kabale District Police Commander, Mr. Joseph Bakaleke, acknowledged the seriousness of the case and confirmed that authorities are actively searching for Onan. Known locally for criminal behavior, Onan fled the scene after the altercation, prompting police to launch a manhunt. Authorities have appealed to witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to assist in the investigation. Meanwhile, Okello’s family, devastated by the sudden loss, is demanding justice for their loved one.
DPC Bakaleke has urged Okello’s family and local community members to remain calm as they gather statements from witnesses and work toward apprehending the suspect. The tragedy has cast a shadow over Kyobugombe, where football rivalry, a source of joy for many fans, turned violent with devastating consequences.
