Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has appealed to residents to remain calm following the announcement of the governorship election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The election, held on Saturday, saw Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerge victorious, securing 291,667 votes. He defeated his main rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes, while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) placed third with 22,761 votes.
In a statement released after INEC’s declaration, Governor Obaseki expressed dissatisfaction with the electoral process, alleging that there was blatant disregard for the rule of law and proper procedures. He urged those who feel aggrieved to seek redress through legal means rather than resort to violence or destruction.
Governor Obaseki acknowledged the intense campaigns led by various political parties in the run-up to the election but lamented that the election’s outcome has left many Edo residents feeling disillusioned and powerless.
“The attractive thing about democracy is the power it bestows on the people to choose who governs them. Therefore, when this power is blatantly seized from the people, it is not just a tragedy, but a travesty of democracy,” Obaseki stated.
He added that the disregard for due process and the rule of law during the election had discouraged many Edo citizens, but he called on them to maintain peace, assuring them that justice will prevail in the end.
Obaseki emphasized that democracy provides legal avenues for addressing grievances, encouraging those affected to pursue resolution through the courts. He reassured Edo residents of the government’s commitment to their safety and wellbeing, urging them to continue their daily activities without fear.
“In a democracy, there are safeguards for addressing grievances, and we hope that those affected will seek resolution for this blatant disregard of law and process,” he added, calling for calm amid the disappointment expressed by many Edo people.
Governor Obaseki’s appeal for peace comes at a critical time as the state navigates the aftermath of a highly contested election. His emphasis on legal recourse and the importance of maintaining order reflects his commitment to upholding democratic principles even in the face of electoral controversy.
