Gowon Urges Northern Elites to Prioritize Nigeria’s Unity Over Regional Interests

Elder statesman and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Retd.), has called on northern elites to champion causes that serve the collective interests of Nigeria rather than focusing on narrow regional concerns. He made this appeal on Wednesday during a visit by a delegation from the Senator Ibrahim Shekarau-led League of Northern Democrats (LND) at the Yakubu Gowon Centre in Abuja.

In his address, Gowon emphasized the critical need for unity and collaboration across Nigeria’s diverse regions. He reminded the northern leaders of the importance of acting in the best interest of the entire country, rather than pursuing actions that could deepen regional divides.

Gowon’s Advocacy for National Unity

Reflecting on his leadership as Head of State, Gowon underscored that his support for the creation of new states was a deliberate effort to address fears of domination and ensure national unity. During his tenure, Nigeria faced significant regional tensions and secession threats, and Gowon’s decision to advocate for state creation was meant to promote a balanced federation and mitigate the risk of disintegration.

“At that time, the fear of disintegration was palpable across all regions. My decision to advocate for state creation was to mitigate these fears and ensure a balanced federation,” Gowon said, emphasizing the importance of unity in the face of national challenges.

Neutrality in Politics

Gowon also reiterated his stance on remaining neutral in politics, noting that his allegiance has always been to Nigeria. He expressed the belief that personal and regional differences should not be allowed to hinder the collective effort to serve the nation’s interests.

“My allegiance has always been to Nigeria. I believe in putting the country first and avoiding the distractions of partisan politics,” he stated.

Northern Challenges and Solutions

Addressing the delegation, Gowon expressed concern about the current challenges facing northern Nigeria, particularly issues of insecurity, disunity, and social problems such as poverty and drug addiction. He also referenced the activities of groups like the Lukurawa from Mali, which have further exacerbated the region’s difficulties.

However, Gowon commended the efforts of the LND to tackle these issues, particularly their focus on fostering unity in the north and across the entire country.

Senator Shekarau’s Remarks

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, Chairman of the League of Northern Democrats, praised Gowon as a symbol of unity and resilience. Shekarau acknowledged the retired general’s leadership during some of Nigeria’s most challenging periods and his ongoing commitment to the nation’s development.

Shekarau clarified that the LND is not a political party but a platform for patriots to collaborate and find solutions to critical issues facing the north, such as disunity, insecurity, and poverty. The LND aims to reposition the north as a leader in Nigeria’s political, economic, and cultural spheres.

A Call for Collective Good

In his closing remarks, Gowon encouraged the LND and other groups to prioritize initiatives that promote national unity and development. He urged that any efforts made should prioritize the collective good of Nigeria, underscoring that collaboration between states is vital, but should never compromise the nation’s unity.

“Whatever you do, prioritize the collective good of Nigeria. Collaboration among states is essential, but it should never undermine the nation’s unity. Your efforts give me hope for Nigeria’s future, and I remain at your service,” Gowon said.

The event concluded with prayers for Gowon’s health and Nigeria’s continued unity. Senator Shekarau also celebrated Gowon on his 90th birthday, offering prayers for his strength and continued contributions to the nation’s progress.
