The grieving parents of 16-year-old British teenager Murray Dowey, who died by suicide after being blackmailed in a sextortion scam, have made an emotional appeal to criminals in Nigeria to stop targeting children. Murray was manipulated by scammers pretending to be a girl, who tricked him into sending explicit images before threatening to expose him unless demands were met.
A Tragic Loss
Mark and Ros Dowey described their son as “a really lovely kid,” and they had no indication something was amiss before finding him dead the morning after the threats. “We had no chance to intervene, to notice there was something wrong and try and help,” his mother shared, reflecting the devastating toll the crime took on their family.
Addressing the perpetrators directly, the Doweys implored, “How would they feel if it was their child or their little brother? You’re terrorizing children for money. It’s cruel and unacceptable in any society.”
Criticism of Social Media Platforms
The grieving parents also criticized tech companies for failing to do enough to combat sextortion and protect children from exploitation. Mark accused them of prioritizing profits over safety, stating, “Social media companies could do so much more, but money stops them from making necessary changes.”
Ros echoed his sentiments, urging tech firms to utilize existing technologies to prevent these crimes and curb the harmful effects of algorithms that expose children to danger. She argued that bold actions and genuine care are needed to prevent further tragedies.

Ros encouraged victims of sextortion to seek help, emphasizing that no mistake or incident is worth ending one’s life over. “If something happens, put the phone down and talk to someone you trust. Don’t be ashamed—it won’t be the end of the world,” she advised.
