Spain’s Jenni Hermoso took the stand on Monday, testifying that the forced kiss by former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales after the 2023 Women’s World Cup final was completely inappropriate and unacceptable in any social or work setting.
Rubiales, who is on trial for sexual assault and coercion, could face two and a half years in prison if convicted.
Hermoso: “I Felt Disrespected”
During her testimony at the National Court in San Fernando de Henares, near Madrid, Hermoso described her emotions in the moments following the incident, stating:
“I felt it was totally out of place, and I then realized my boss was kissing me. This shouldn’t happen in any social or work setting.”
She further emphasized that a kiss on the lips should only happen with her consent and that the incident stained what should have been one of the happiest days of her life.
Rubiales’ Defense
Rubiales has continued to downplay the kiss, claiming it was merely a “peck between friends celebrating” and denying any coercion. However, the scandal ignited global outrage, leading to his resignation as Spain’s football federation president and sparking widespread discussions about gender equality and respect in sports.
Trial Ongoing
The trial, which began Monday, is expected to run until February 19, with prosecutors seeking justice for Hermoso and hoping to set a precedent for addressing misconduct in sports and beyond.
