The race for the Anambra APC Gubernatorial Primary Election has taken a new turn with the official declaration of interest by High Chief Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, a respected party stalwart and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). His entry into the contest signals an intense competition as party members prepare to choose their flag bearer.
A seasoned political figure, Onunkwo is not new to the gubernatorial race, having previously contested in the primaries. As a major financier and pillar of the APC in Anambra, his influence spans across wards, local government areas, and the entire state.
Speaking during his official declaration before the Zonal Executive Committee of the APC from Anambra South Senatorial District, alongside executives from Aguata and six other local governments, Onunkwo, popularly known as “Onwa Umuchu,” emphasized his deep-rooted contributions to the party and his unwavering commitment to Anambra’s progress.
In his speech, he outlined a comprehensive development agenda, stressing that his background as an engineer uniquely qualifies him to tackle security challenges and drive infrastructural transformation in Anambra State. He passionately called on party faithful, leaders, and stakeholders to support his candidacy, promising to bring positive change through his “Four Years of Ifediche” vision for the state.
The event saw a strong show of support from party officials. The APC Chairman for Umuchu Ward urged members from Anambra South Senatorial Zone to unite behind Onunkwo, citing his exceptional leadership qualities and track record. Another stakeholder reinforced this sentiment, stating that a true leader must possess vision and capacity, both of which Onunkwo has demonstrated over the years.
Among the dignitaries present were:
- Hon. Godson Anyadike, leading executives from Aguata’s 20 wards
- Hon. Izuchukwu Okeke, representing zonal executives
- Mazi Engr. Chidi Orji, leading members of the state executive from Anambra South
