In a dramatic turn of events, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing allegations of abuse of office and gross misconduct. The impeachment took place following a turbulent session, with the lawmakers swiftly electing Mojisola Meranda, the representative for Apapa I, as the new speaker.
Additionally, the House removed the Clerk of the Assembly, Olalekan Onafeko, who had been appointed by Obasa. It is alleged that Obasa and Onafeko had played a role in the controversial decision to bar journalists from covering the Assembly’s proceedings.
Security Lockdown and Arrests
As the impeachment proceedings unfolded, the premises of the Lagos State House of Assembly were heavily secured by armed personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Lagos Task Force, and the Police. These forces took control of the area, turning away motorists and preventing unauthorized individuals from accessing the premises.
A group of individuals, believed to be supporters of the ousted speaker Obasa from Agege, attempted to invade the Assembly complex but were intercepted by security personnel. Some of the miscreants were arrested and taken away in a Black Maria. Charms and amulets were reportedly found on the suspects.
Meranda Sworn in as New Speaker
In the wake of the tumultuous session, Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Upon taking the oath of office, Meranda affirmed her commitment to performing her duties honestly and faithfully, in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Her appointment marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Assembly, as she steps into the role previously held by Obasa.
