Drama Unfolds as GAC Members Clash Over Obasa’s Removal
Lagos State is witnessing heightened political tension as the impeachment of former Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has sparked a clash among members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the state’s apex advisory body.
Prominent GAC members, including Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and Senator Anthony Adefuye, have voiced sharply opposing views on Obasa’s impeachment. While Adefuye decried the process as illegal, Obanikoro dismissed the remarks as “careless” and “irresponsible,” calling for restraint among leaders.
Obanikoro expressed his concerns, stating:
“Senator Adefuye’s comment on Obasa’s removal is very unfortunate and inconsequential. Leaders should not rush to make personal statements on such sensitive issues. Since the GAC has not made any official pronouncement, it is inappropriate for any member to act unilaterally.”
Meanwhile, GAC Secretary Mr. Mutiu Are, emphasizing the need for unity, assured the public that the council would address the crisis internally.
“Whatever is happening in Lagos politics remains a family affair. The GAC has its mechanisms for resolving issues, and we will handle this matter in a family way,” he said.
Obasa’s Impeachment: Lagos Youths and Activists Demand Justice
Amid the political rift, youth groups and socio-political organizations have weighed in, demanding accountability from the embattled former Speaker.
The Convener of the Assembly of Lagos Youths, Mr. Lasisi Robert, insisted that Obasa’s impeachment was legitimate and final.
“Mudashiru Obasa stands impeached—no going back. His claims of being the Speaker are an invitation to anarchy. The process for his removal adhered to constitutional guidelines, and any statements suggesting otherwise are reckless,” Robert said in a statement.
He also called on the state government and law enforcement to ensure peace and security around the Lagos State House of Assembly, warning that Obasa’s remarks could incite unrest.
“Lovers of Lagos” Call for Arrest of Former Speaker
Adding fuel to the fire, the socio-political group Lovers of Lagos has demanded Obasa’s immediate arrest for allegedly using the official residence of the Speaker after his removal.
In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Yinka Olatunji, the group criticized Obasa’s return to the Speaker’s official lodge in Ikeja GRA as a “show of shame.”
“It is expected that he vacates the official residence of the Speaker. His return, coupled with the mobilization of supporters, is a breach of protocol and raises concerns of potential unrest. We call on the police to intervene swiftly to maintain law and order,” Olatunji said.
The group also highlighted Obasa’s failed attempt to reverse his impeachment during his visit to Abuja to meet with President Bola Tinubu. Despite his lobbying efforts, the process, supported by 32 out of 39 lawmakers, remains final.
Impeachment Aftermath: Lagos Braces for More Political Drama
The political fallout from Obasa’s impeachment has left Lagosians divided. Critics argue that his actions undermine the integrity of democratic processes, while supporters believe he has been unfairly treated.
The new Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, is expected to bring stability to the Assembly amidst calls for stricter adherence to constitutional guidelines.
