Marcus Rashford has completed a loan move to Aston Villa for the rest of the season, bringing an end to his first-team exile at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim. The 27-year-old forward, once a fan favorite at Old Trafford, has not played for United since December 12 and had previously hinted that he was ready for a “new challenge.”
Despite interest from AC Milan and Barcelona, both clubs were reportedly put off by his £300,000-a-week wages. Instead, Villa stepped in, agreeing to pay at least 75% of his salary, with performance-based bonuses potentially increasing that figure to 90%. Additionally, Unai Emery’s side has an option to make the move permanent for £40 million at the end of the season.
Rashford: “Aston Villa Was an Easy Decision”
Upon signing for Villa, Rashford expressed his excitement about the move, highlighting his admiration for the club’s ambitions.
“I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me, but Aston Villa was an easy decision,” Rashford said in a club statement.
“I really admire the way Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager’s ambitions.”
“I just want to play football and am excited to get started. I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season.”
The move comes after Villa sold Colombian striker Jhon Duran to Saudi club Al Nassr for £64 million, prompting Emery to strengthen his attacking options. Villa are currently eighth in the Premier League, sitting eight points ahead of 13th-placed United, and remain in contention for Champions League qualification.
Rashford’s Fall from Grace at United
Rashford’s dramatic decline at Manchester United has been one of the most shocking downturns in modern football. Since breaking through the academy, he has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances, winning major trophies including the Europa League, two FA Cups, and two League Cups.
However, his work ethic and attitude in training have reportedly been criticized by Amorim, who made it clear that Rashford needed to change his approach.
Last weekend, following United’s 1-0 win at Fulham, Amorim made a brutal statement regarding Rashford’s status at the club:
“Our team should be so much better with Rashford, but he has to change. If he does change, we are more than welcome to put a talent like Rashford in, and we need it. But at this moment, I think it’s really clear that we have to set some standards. That’s all.”
His form has also suffered significantly, with just eight goals last season after netting a career-high 30 goals in the 2022/23 campaign. So far this season, he has seven goals in 24 appearances.
