Former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, has officially stepped down from the race for the presidency of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, citing respect for a court order issued by the Enugu State High Court. The court order restrained him from participating in the election scheduled for January 10, 2025, citing alleged non-indigene status.
Addressing the media late Thursday night, Okiro expressed disappointment at the court’s decision, which he claimed undermined his fundamental rights. Despite not being formally served the court order, Okiro emphasized his unwavering respect for the rule of law and his commitment to democracy.
Okiro presented extensive evidence of his indigene status, affirming his Igbo heritage and roots in Egbema, Rivers State. He highlighted records including official documentation, traditional attestations, books he authored, and his representation of Rivers State in various Igbo and national forums.
Upholding the Rule of Law
Okiro stressed that his decision to step aside demonstrates his respect for the principles of justice and democracy. He called the court order “unfortunate” and noted that he was not invited to present his case before the decision was made.
“Obedience to court orders, no matter how unfavorable, demonstrates our commitment to democracy,” he said. He reassured his supporters that his legal team is actively pursuing the matter to ensure justice prevails.
Calls for Unity
Okiro appealed for calm and urged his supporters across the Igbo-speaking states of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Delta, and his home state of Rivers to respect the rule of law. He reaffirmed his dedication to the ideals of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, including unity, progress, and peace, emphasizing the importance of these principles for the organization’s mission.
Acknowledging the unwavering support of his community and Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara, Okiro expressed confidence in overcoming the setback. He assured his supporters that the legal process would vindicate his eligibility and commitment to the values of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
