Mojisola Meranda Assumes Office as Lagos Speaker Amidst Security Measures and Political Tensions

Mojisola Meranda has officially taken office as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a significant moment in the state’s political landscape. The event was a collective display of support as Meranda was accompanied by all the lawmakers except for the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. This transition in leadership follows a period of tension, especially after Obasa’s claims that his impeachment was unconstitutional.

During the ceremony, Meranda was warmly received, and her fellow lawmakers showed their enthusiastic backing for her leadership. As they posed for photographs to mark the occasion, they chanted affirmations such as, “Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us,” and “You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker.” These chants resonated with a unified message of solidarity and hope for continued progress under her leadership.

After the formalities, Meranda led the lawmakers to her official office, where the team engaged in intense prayers, a customary ritual that accompanies significant transitions in leadership. The prayers were meant to bless her role and ensure success in her new position. The strong show of support from the lawmakers underlined the confidence they have in Meranda as the new Speaker.

This development comes in the wake of claims by former Speaker Obasa that his removal was unconstitutional and did not follow due process. His statement has contributed to the ongoing political drama surrounding the House of Assembly, casting a shadow over the transition of power. However, Meranda’s supporters are determined to move forward and focus on the work ahead.

In response to the ongoing political upheaval and to ensure a smooth and peaceful session, security around the Lagos State House of Assembly has been bolstered. A notice from the Acting Clerk of the House, Taiwo Ottun, was issued, informing all staff and legislative aides that they must present valid identity cards to gain access to the premises. The notice emphasized that entry would be denied to anyone without proper identification, underlining the importance of security in maintaining order.

Additionally, the Lagos State Police Command has reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining peace outside the premises of the Assembly and throughout the state. In an interview on Sunday, Commissioner of Police Ishola Olawale stressed that while the police had no business inside the Assembly itself, it was their responsibility to ensure calm and prevent any disruptions around the vicinity and beyond.

With this new chapter in the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly, all eyes are now on how Meranda will navigate the challenges ahead, balancing her duties while maintaining unity and stability in the face of political tensions.
