The National Examination Council (NECO) has released the results for the 2024 Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) internal examination, revealing encouraging statistics regarding student performance. Announcing the results at NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State, the Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, reported that 828,284 candidates, which constitutes 60.55% of those who sat for the examination, successfully secured credits in both English Language and Mathematics.

In total, 1,376,436 candidates registered for the examination, and out of this number, 1,367,736 candidates actually participated. The breakdown of these figures shows a slightly higher male registration, with 706,950 males and 669,473 females, while the number of males who sat for the exam was 702,112 compared to 665,624 females. This year’s results showcase a significant achievement in overall performance, as 83.9% of candidates attained five credits or more, irrespective of whether they passed English and Mathematics.
The timeline for the examination was structured to ensure a smooth process from start to finish. Conducted from June 19 to July 26, 2024, the marking exercise took place between August 19 and September 8. Prof. Wushishi highlighted that the results were released 55 days after the last written paper, marking a timely conclusion to all processes involved in the assessment.
Addressing concerns regarding examination malpractices, the Registrar noted a significant decrease in cases reported this year, with 8,407 instances of misconduct compared to 12,030 in 2023. This decline indicates a concerted effort to improve the integrity of the examination process. Furthermore, it was revealed that 40 schools across 17 states were found to be involved in mass cheating. These institutions will face an appropriate panel to determine sanctions, which will uphold the standards of the examination.
In a related note, the Council has recommended the blacklisting of 21 supervisors due to serious violations, including extortion and being under the influence of alcohol during examination hours. Such measures are intended to ensure that the examination environment remains fair and conducive to all candidates.
