In a landmark development, Nigeria has been officially admitted as a partner country in the BRICS multinational bloc, as announced by the Brazilian government on Friday. This strategic inclusion underscores Nigeria’s growing influence on the global stage, particularly as a key player in fostering cooperation among Global South nations and advocating for international reforms.
The statement, issued by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, highlighted Nigeria’s shared vision with BRICS nations in advancing the priorities of South-South collaboration and global governance reform. With a population of over 200 million—the largest in Africa—and a robust economy, Nigeria was acknowledged as an essential partner aligning with the bloc’s goals.
“With the world’s sixth-largest population and as one of Africa’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS. It actively participates in strengthening South-South cooperation and advancing reforms in global governance—key priorities under Brazil’s leadership,” the statement noted.
Currently presiding over BRICS in 2025, Brazil took the reins from Russia on January 1, setting an agenda that emphasizes inclusivity and global economic balance.
Nigeria’s formal recognition as the ninth partner nation within BRICS reflects the bloc’s efforts to expand its outreach and influence. This partnership was established at the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October 2024. Alongside Nigeria, countries such as Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan have joined this partner category, further enriching the bloc’s diversity.
Nigeria’s membership signals an opportunity for enhanced collaboration in trade, technology, and sustainable development initiatives. It also positions the country to play a more significant role in shaping global policies and fostering equitable economic partnerships.
This historic inclusion is expected to further amplify Nigeria’s voice in international platforms while fostering stronger ties among Global South nations working toward a more balanced and inclusive world order.
