The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has refuted rumors circulating on social media that the official account of the Enugu State Government was hacked, resulting in the theft of N1.09 billion.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that the allegations were false. He explained that the case was thoroughly investigated by the NPF’s National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC) and determined to be a procurement fraud rather than a cyber breach.
“This assertion is completely unfounded. It was a case of procurement fraud, not a cyber-breach. The suspect has been arrested, and the funds have been recovered,” Adejobi stated.
Robust Security Measures in Place
The Enugu State Government, along with other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), has been working in close collaboration with the NPF-NCCC to enhance the security of its financial systems. This partnership has led to the implementation of fortified protocols designed to safeguard government accounts against fraud and cyber threats.
Adejobi emphasized the importance of such collaborations in preventing financial crimes and ensuring accountability within government institutions.
Call to Curb Misinformation
The police spokesperson also urged the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of information before sharing it. He warned against the spread of misinformation, which can undermine trust and create unnecessary panic.
“The public is advised to refrain from engaging in misinformation and to always verify the credibility of news sources,” Adejobi added.
This clarification from the Nigeria Police Force is expected to allay fears and restore confidence in the security measures protecting the financial systems of the Enugu State Government and other agencies.
