The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has strongly denied allegations that its recent airstrikes targeting terrorist hideouts in Zamfara State resulted in civilian casualties. Reports emerged claiming that 16 vigilantes, members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG), were mistakenly killed during the operation in Tungar Kara, Maradun Local Government Area.
Counter-security expert Zagazola Makama initially reported that NAF’s strikes led to the deaths of vigilantes, sparking public outcry. However, NAF spokesperson AVM Akinboyewa rejected these claims, calling them baseless and potentially propaganda aimed at undermining military operations. According to Akinboyewa, NAF takes extensive precautions to minimize civilian harm during airstrikes, relying on intelligence from multiple verifiable sources.
While the allegations have not been substantiated, NAF has launched an investigation to determine the accuracy of the claims. Akinboyewa stated, “No credible evidence supports these reports at this time. Our operations are meticulously planned to ensure the safety of civilians while effectively targeting bandits.”
NAF highlighted the success of the Tungar Kara strikes, which neutralized several bandits and rescued kidnap victims. A statement titled, “NAF Conducts Decisive Air Strikes in Zamfara, Investigating Vigilante Casualty Reports,” emphasized the Air Force’s unwavering commitment to civilian safety while combating banditry.
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal weighed in, expressing both support and concern. While he commended NAF’s intensified efforts against banditry, he extended his condolences to families of vigilantes reportedly affected by the airstrike. Governor Lawal’s statement, issued through his Senior Special Assistant, Sulaiman Idris, acknowledged the tragedy of misidentification and urged for heightened accuracy in military operations.
