In a forceful statement, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, warned the recently emerged terror group, Lakurawa, against threatening national peace. Speaking at a Customs conference in Abuja, Ribadu assured the public that the federal government would dismantle this group swiftly, highlighting the strong stance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration on security. “This is Nigeria of 2024,” Ribadu declared, “we will finish them.”
This warning comes as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, deployed military forces to Kebbi State following a deadly attack by Lakurawa militants in Mera village, Augie Local Government Area. The attack left 17 people dead, prompting immediate deployment of soldiers and armored tanks to the area in an effort to restore security and deter future violence. Upon arrival, the military managed to retrieve rustled livestock, sending a clear message of the federal government’s readiness to safeguard lives and property across Nigeria.
Ribadu explained that this new wave of decisive action against terrorism reflects what he called “Tinubu’s gains”—achievements of President Tinubu’s government in restoring peace across regions previously affected by insurgency. Ribadu praised the recent cooperation across Nigeria’s armed forces, intelligence agencies, and police, noting that they now function as a cohesive team for the first time. He pointed to reduced insurgent activity in places like the Niger Delta, Southeast, and Northeast Nigeria as proof of these collaborative efforts. “For the first time,” he stated, “the entire security sector leaders are working as one.”
Highlighting improvements in national stability, Ribadu pointed out that Nigeria’s oil production has risen to 1.8 million barrels per day, attributing this to the reduced violence in the oil-producing Niger Delta. The NSA cited this as one of Tinubu’s gains, alongside a more peaceful Southeast region and a decrease in Boko Haram’s influence, with many militants now fleeing to neighboring countries. “Every day, people are surrendering,” Ribadu said, adding that “critics will be quiet as change unfolds across our nation.”
Ribadu also commended Customs Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi for surpassing the agency’s 2024 revenue target. Adeniyi reported a record collection of over N5 trillion in revenue, with projections suggesting a 10% surplus by year-end. This growth is part of Tinubu’s economic achievements, Ribadu noted, underlined by reforms in foreign exchange and tighter fiscal policies. He also mentioned plans for a Customs University to address high personnel turnover and strengthen human capital within the Customs Service.
Ribadu revealed that President Tinubu’s influence is increasingly recognized internationally. “Today, the whole world is looking for President Tinubu,” he said, noting recent diplomatic engagements, including upcoming visits from Indian and German leaders and renewed ties with BRICS nations. This, according to Ribadu, is further evidence of Nigeria’s strengthening global position.
Meanwhile, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris expressed gratitude for the military support, pledging his commitment to securing residents’ safety. Media aide Abdullahi Idris Zuru echoed this sentiment, describing the military’s presence as crucial in relieving rural communities under siege by violent groups.
In closing, Ribadu paid tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taofeek Lagbaja, calling him a dedicated officer known for his loyalty and commitment to Nigeria’s security. Ribadu reaffirmed the government’s dedication to preserving Lagbaja’s legacy through continued security efforts, saying, “We will secure this country. We will fix it. Tinubu is a success.”
