At the Omo Olowu Day celebration held over the weekend in Abeokuta, former President Olusegun Obasanjo called upon affluent Nigerians to offer assistance to their less privileged fellow citizens facing rising economic challenges. The event, which marked its 25th edition, took place at Oba Odeleye Park, Oke-Sokori, and brought together leaders, community members, and guests to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Owu Kingdom in Ogun State. Obasanjo used the occasion to highlight the importance of community support and collective responsibility, urging Nigerians with the means to lend a hand to those struggling in the current economic climate.
Obasanjo expressed concern over the growing economic pressures affecting millions of Nigerians and noted that private citizens, particularly those with considerable resources, could play a role in alleviating some of the hardship. He emphasized that while government policies and reforms are in place, a concerted effort from individuals and organizations is necessary to reach the people most affected by economic downturns. Obasanjo stressed that in times of hardship, community spirit and mutual support are crucial, especially from those in a position to make a difference.
Further underscoring the importance of local development, Obasanjo called on Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to partner with the Owu Kingdom in strengthening agricultural initiatives, business opportunities, and trade. According to Obasanjo, this collaborative focus on agriculture could help ensure food sufficiency and provide sustainable means for people to support themselves. He argued that with the right support, Ogun State’s agricultural sector could be expanded, creating more jobs, securing food resources, and fostering economic stability across local communities.
In response, Governor Abiodun reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to enhancing Ogun State’s economic and social infrastructure, noting that agriculture and tourism would be key pillars in the state’s growth. He explained that the government has been focusing on exploiting the state’s tourism potential as part of a broader initiative to promote Ogun as a center of cultural, social, and economic advancement. Abiodun said, “In support of this vision, our administration is steadfast in its commitment to developing tourism as part of our broader social, cultural, and infrastructural development initiatives. We are committed to creating an environment that places people at the heart of our efforts to build a future together.”
Abiodun also praised the cultural significance of the Omo Olowu Day celebration, noting that events like this serve as important reminders of the state’s shared heritage and values. He pointed out that the festival highlights core values such as community unity, love, and harmony, which are as relevant today as they were in previous generations. He stressed that these values have not only defined Ogun State’s identity but have also driven its development, as the state remains dedicated to upholding and integrating these principles into its policies and projects.
