Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the Deputy President of the Senate in the 9th National Assembly, has called on Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to remain in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not want them. The statement came during a meeting with APC leaders, elders, and stakeholders in the Ika South and Ika North East Local Government Areas on Monday. Omo-Agege, who was the APC governorship candidate in the 2023 Delta State election, emphasized that while the APC is expanding in Delta State, it has no interest in the two political figures switching to the party.
Omo-Agege pointed out the APC’s growing influence in Delta, noting that the party had successfully won two senatorial seats and two House of Representatives seats in the 2023 elections. He also highlighted that the only PDP senator from Delta is set to join the APC, along with three House of Representatives members. Despite the PDP’s claim that the APC had faded in Delta, he stressed that the APC is now the dominant party in the state.
In his remarks, Omo-Agege provided an analysis of the Delta Central Senatorial District, where both he and Governor Oborevwori hail from. He revealed that in this district, APC had won two out of three House of Representatives seats, and five out of nine House of Assembly seats, showing that the party had significant support.
The Senator criticized Oborevwori’s administration for attempting to downplay APC’s rise, despite its growing strength in the state. He also stated that APC had secured 25% of votes in Ika South and Ika North East during the elections, even with a sitting PDP governor and a former vice-presidential candidate in the area. He reassured APC members that any internal challenges within the party would be addressed before the 2027 elections, while stressing that the PDP’s national crisis could render it irrelevant by the time of the next election cycle.
Omo-Agege expressed confidence in APC’s future growth, stating that the successes of President Bola Tinubu’s policies had made the party the most attractive in the state. He mentioned that the party was expecting three senators and additional members of the House of Representatives and House of Assembly to join the APC soon. However, he categorically rejected the idea of Oborevwori and Okowa joining the APC, saying, “We have built this party from scratch, and we will not allow people with questionable records to destroy what we have worked hard for.”
In his closing remarks, Omo-Agege reiterated that Oborevwori and Okowa should remain in the PDP and focus on rebuilding their party. He also addressed the situation in the Delta State House of Assembly, pointing out that Oborevwori’s government was restricting the freedom of Assembly members. He said many of these members were expected to join the APC, but Oborevwori and Okowa were not welcome.
Barr. Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of APC, also reassured party members that key stakeholders are committed to resolving any internal issues within the Delta State chapter ahead of the 2027 elections.
Other party leaders, including Hon. Fada Ibudeh, Chief Stevenson Ikpade, Chief Sunny Chuks Obuseh, and several others, called for genuine reconciliation within the party to strengthen the APC for the upcoming election cycle.
