The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly dismissed rumors that it is working to bring back former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
This clarification came from the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, during an interview with BBC Hausa. He emphasized that there are no plans or invitations extended to Jonathan to rejoin the race under the PDP’s platform.
Setting the Record Straight
Abdullahi explained that the claims originated from misinterpretations of his earlier remarks about Jonathan’s eligibility to contest for the presidency.
“The report that PDP has issued its presidential ticket to former President Goodluck Jonathan or invited him to contest the 2027 presidential election is false,” Abdullahi stated.
He clarified that his comments were made during an interview in response to questions about Jonathan’s potential return to politics.
“I said Jonathan is eligible to run because, as a Nigerian, the law allows him to contest. He still has one more term left. There is nothing wrong with him contesting if he so desires, but that doesn’t mean the PDP has approached him or offered him the ticket,” he added.
PDP’s Stance
The PDP, according to Abdullahi, has already done enough for Jonathan, including supporting his presidency in the past. He pointed out that the party is currently focused on nurturing other competent candidates, highlighting the fact that it boasts 12 sitting governors and numerous experienced politicians capable of leading the country.
He also cited a statement made by Jonathan’s wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, where she ruled out her husband’s return to Aso Villa. “Ticket is given to someone who has shown interest. It wasn’t long ago that his wife said he wouldn’t run for presidency again. How then can we consider him?” Abdullahi asked rhetorically.
A Future Without Jonathan?
Abdullahi reiterated that while Jonathan remains constitutionally eligible for one more term in office, there has been no indication from him or the PDP regarding plans for 2027. The party, he said, remains focused on its current leadership and preparing its existing candidates for future contests.
With the PDP making clear its intentions, it seems the speculation around Jonathan’s potential candidacy for 2027 has been firmly put to rest—for now.
