The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has officially rejected the results of the Edo State Governorship election, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). During a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Acting National Chairman Amb. Umar Damagum expressed the party’s strong dissatisfaction with the electoral outcome.
Damagum asserted that the citizens of Edo State clearly voted for the PDP candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and that anything less than his announcement as the governor-elect would not be acceptable. “The people of Edo have spoken, and we expect INEC to honor their mandate,” he emphasized.
He urged INEC to utilize the provisions within the Electoral Act to correct what he described as an unjust result. “We call on INEC to retrace its steps and do the right thing,” Damagum stated, highlighting the importance of integrity in the electoral process.
Additionally, the PDP leader raised concerns about alleged collusion between the All Progressives Congress (APC), a compromised INEC, and the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) overseeing the zone. He claimed that the PDP had previously alerted the public to these manipulative plans prior to the election.
Damagum’s statements reflect a broader discontent within the PDP regarding the electoral process, signaling potential legal and political actions as they seek to reclaim what they believe is a rightful victory for their candidate. The party’s leadership remains firm in their commitment to ensuring that the voice of the people is heard and respected in the electoral outcomes.
