Peter Obi Urges Transparency and Public Involvement in Tax Reforms

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to ensure transparency and public involvement in its proposed tax reforms. Speaking on Tuesday through his official X handle, Obi emphasized the importance of open dialogue and citizen engagement in shaping policies that affect the entire nation.

The Need for Public Debate

Obi stressed that while tax reforms are necessary, they should not be implemented without public input. He highlighted the importance of conducting public hearings to gather opinions from Nigerians across different sectors. According to him, this approach fosters trust and inclusivity in the decision-making process.

“Tax reform is essential, but it must involve robust public debate,” Obi stated. “A public hearing allows Nigerians from all walks of life to participate and share their views. This builds trust and ensures that everyone’s voice is heard.”

Caution Against Rushing Reforms

Obi warned against rushing through tax reforms, emphasizing the need for careful deliberation. He pointed out that decisions of such magnitude require extensive consideration to avoid negative consequences. “Matters like tax reforms should not be rushed. They need careful thought and input from all stakeholders,” he said.

Balancing Government and Public Interests

The former Anambra State governor also highlighted the need to balance government interests with those of the citizens. He cautioned that focusing solely on increasing government revenue without considering the impact on the people could undermine the reforms’ success.

“It’s not enough to focus only on how much the government can collect. The overall impact on the nation and its people must be considered. Tax policies should benefit everyone, not just the government,” Obi noted.

Building Public Trust and Legitimacy

Obi emphasized the importance of gaining public support for any policy changes. He called on the government to educate and engage with citizens to build trust and legitimacy. “For any reform to succeed, the people must trust the government. Without trust, even the best policies can fail,” he added.

A Call for Inclusive Governance

In conclusion, Obi urged the government to prioritize transparency, public engagement, and inclusive governance. He believes that involving citizens in the policymaking process is key to building a more participatory democracy and achieving lasting change.

“Let’s focus on transparency, deliberations, and public involvement. This is how we can create a truly participatory democracy and make a new Nigeria possible,” Obi said.

His message resonates with calls for greater accountability and inclusivity in governance, especially in matters that directly affect the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
