Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has approved Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, marking a significant milestone for the ancient kingdom. This decision, based on the recommendation of the Oyomesi—the traditional kingmakers—follows extensive consultations and traditional divinations to identify a successor worthy of the revered throne.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on Friday. Oyelade explained that Owoade emerged as the chosen candidate after careful deliberation by the Oyomesi, with Governor Makinde granting final approval.
“This appointment reflects the deep cultural traditions of Oyo Kingdom, where both consultations and divinations guide the process of selecting a monarch,” Oyelade said in the statement.
Resolving a Longstanding Dispute
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, highlighted that Owoade’s appointment brings an end to the legal and social disputes that arose after the passing of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, on April 22, 2022.
“This decision has resolved the socio-legal controversies that have persisted since the transition of the late Oba Adeyemi. We now have an opportunity to move forward as a united community under the leadership of the new Alaafin,” Ojo stated.
The Oyo State government called on residents to support Prince Owoade as he begins his reign, urging the people to celebrate this historic moment together.
A New Era for Oyo Kingdom
Prince Abimbola Owoade’s ascension is expected to usher in a new era of peace, unity, and prosperity for Oyo Kingdom. The Alaafin, traditionally a pivotal figure in Yoruba culture and politics, plays a key role in fostering harmony and development within the community.
With this appointment, Oyo Kingdom looks forward to continuing its legacy of cultural richness and historical significance, under the leadership of a ruler chosen in accordance with age-old traditions. Residents of Oyo State now anticipate a period of renewed stability and growth as the new Alaafin assumes his duties.
