Prostate Cancer Myths Debunked: Urologist Emphasizes Science Over Misconceptions

Consultant urologist Dr. Odezi Otobo has refuted widespread social media claims that frequent lovemaking and ejaculation can prevent prostate cancer, stating there is no medical or scientific evidence to support such assertions. Speaking at a men’s health outreach organized by the Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calabar, Otobo clarified that prostate cancer is primarily influenced by hereditary factors, lifestyle choices, and environmental conditions.

The outreach, held as part of the global “Movember” campaign, aimed to raise awareness about men’s health issues, including prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.

Understanding the Facts About Prostate Cancer

Dr. Otobo cautioned against misinformation, emphasizing that early detection and proper medical care are the most effective ways to combat prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer is a slow-growing (indolent) disease, and it is best managed through early detection, regular medical checkups, and lifestyle modifications—not by adopting unverified practices or relying on unscientific advice,” he stated.

For men in their 40s and 50s, he stressed the importance of regular screenings, particularly for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, as this can aid in the early detection of the disease.

Movember Campaign: Advocating Men’s Health

The outreach was part of the Movember campaign, an annual November initiative aimed at increasing awareness of men’s health. Activities like growing moustaches serve as conversation starters to discuss sensitive health issues often overlooked.

Mr. Yegwa Ukpo, Executive Director of the Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre, highlighted the societal tendency for men to keep health concerns private.

“Masculinity often pushes men to ignore health issues or avoid seeking help. This outreach is a reminder for men to take their health seriously. The rising cases of sudden deaths among men in their 40s and 50s are alarming and preventable,” Ukpo said.

A Collaborative Effort

The outreach, held at Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI), brought together healthcare providers and organizations, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rotary Club, and Pink Africa. It focused on screenings for heart, kidney, and liver function, as well as prostate health.

Dr. Saviour Eze, Head of the Medical Team at CCCI, explained the church’s involvement in the outreach as part of their holistic approach to well-being.

“While we pray for healing, we also believe in God’s provision of medical expertise to address physical illnesses,” Eze remarked.

Takeaway: Prioritize Men’s Health

This initiative serves as a vital reminder for men to prioritize their health by seeking regular medical checkups and avoiding unverified health practices. With rising cases of preventable illnesses and sudden deaths, such outreach programs aim to encourage men to break the silence on health issues and adopt proactive approaches to their well-being.
