The legendary tale of Queen Idia, the courageous and influential mother of the Oba of Benin (1504–1550), is set to mesmerize global audiences as Nigerian filmmaker Patience Ojheneovo Okhuofu embarks on an ambitious cinematic journey. Titled “Queen Idia: A Wife, A Mother, and A Warrior,” the film promises to bring the awe-inspiring story of this historical icon to the big screen.
Queen Idia is celebrated for her fierce warrior spirit and pivotal role in securing her son’s reign over the Edo Empire. Known as a relentless defender of her family and kingdom, she safeguarded the royal lineage and upheld the prosperity of Benin during her lifetime. The legendary Festac mask, commissioned in her honor, symbolizes her enduring influence, although it remains a poignant reminder of colonial looting during the British invasion of Benin.
A Decade of Research and Passion
Okhuofu, a member of the Uyiedo Theatre Troupe, has spent 10 years delving into Queen Idia’s life, fueled by a passion for spotlighting the achievements of women in history. With blessings from Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, received two years ago, Okhuofu is set to start filming this epic drama before the end of the month in Benin City.
The historical drama will be directed and produced by Okhuofu, with renowned filmmaker Patience Oghre Imobhio as Assistant Director. Featuring a large and talented cast, the production aims to authentically depict Queen Idia’s story, focusing on her resilience, leadership, and sacrifices.
