The Nigeria Police Force has raised serious concerns over the connection between the growing “hookup culture” and the alarming rise in cases of missing young women, often linked to ritual killings. Omolola Odutola, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, highlighted this issue during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.

Odutola revealed that at least 10 young women go missing daily in Ogun State alone, most between the ages of 20 to 32 years. She emphasized that these disappearances are often not random but linked to encounters facilitated through hookup channels and apps, where victims are lured by strangers to dangerous situations.
“These cases stem from the dangerous belief among some youths, particularly males, that ritual killings can lead to wealth,” Odutola stated. She noted that ritualists deceive young people into believing that acquiring human body parts or skulls can result in riches, perpetuating this deadly practice.

The Ogun State Police Command, led by its Commissioner, has intensified efforts to curb these incidents. The force is also collaborating with the Women Affairs Commission to provide counseling and support for victims who escape, helping them recover from trauma and anxiety.
“We have ongoing advocacy and sensitization campaigns to enlighten young people about the dangers of hookup culture and debunk the myth that ritual killings can bring wealth,” Odutola added.
