Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has expressed his disappointment with Marcus Rashford’s current predicament at the club, criticizing the 27-year-old for his recent lack of involvement in the first team under manager Ruben Amorim. Rashford has been absent from the squad for seven weeks, and Amorim has made it clear that the England forward must “change” if he is to have a future at Old Trafford.
Rashford was left out of the squad for Manchester United’s Europa League clash with Romanian side FCSB, despite training with the team after a period of individual sessions. His exclusion from the match, along with rumors linking him with a potential loan move to Barcelona, has raised questions about his future at the club. With the transfer window closing soon, Rashford’s situation is becoming more urgent.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane couldn’t hide his frustration, stating he could not understand the situation. “Whatever’s going on with players leaving, months left on contracts, a player who doesn’t train properly… I don’t understand it,” Keane said. “Especially if you think he wants to move, which is more of a reason to train properly so when you go to a new club you’re up to speed and when you leave the club at least you showed a decent attitude. He must be ashamed.”
Wayne Rooney, another United legend, shared his observations of Rashford’s recent struggles, recalling seeing him alone on the training pitch with a fitness coach while parents walked by with their children. Rooney called it “embarrassing” for Rashford and admitted he had spoken to the player, advising him to leave the club to restart his career.
“I’ve spoken to Marcus a couple of times and I’ve given him my thoughts and feelings that he needs to leave the football club because whatever is going on in his life and at Manchester United, he’s not the same,” Rooney said. “For him to have a fresh start, he needs to leave the club.”
Rashford, who has been with Manchester United since his youth days, has netted 138 goals in 426 appearances for the club. He has scored seven times in 24 games this season. However, his reported £300,000-a-week salary on a contract that runs until 2028 could complicate any potential move away from Old Trafford.
As the transfer window nears its close, Rashford’s future remains uncertain, with both Keane and Rooney calling for change in his career.
