Russia’s military has announced new territorial gains in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, claiming control of Yelyzavetivka, a small village located approximately 10 kilometers (six miles) south of Kurakhove. This marks another step in Russia’s steady advance in its ongoing campaign to seize resource-rich territories in the war-torn region.
Russia’s Fastest Advance in Months
The Russian Defense Ministry described the capture of Yelyzavetivka as part of a broader strategy to solidify its position in eastern Ukraine. Over the last two months, Russia’s military has been advancing at its fastest pace since the start of its offensive in 2022, bolstered by increased manpower and weaponry.
This rapid progress comes as Moscow appears to be consolidating its battlefield position ahead of major geopolitical changes, including the upcoming inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in January 2025.
Ukraine’s Counterclaims: Heavy Losses for North Korean Troops
While Russia continues its advance in Donetsk, Ukraine has reported significant developments in the western Kursk region of Russia, where it launched a surprise counteroffensive during the summer. Ukrainian forces claim to have inflicted heavy casualties on North Korean troops reportedly deployed by Russia in the area.
According to Ukrainian military intelligence, at least 30 soldiers from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) were killed or wounded between December 14 and 15 in clashes near the villages of Plekhovo, Vorozhba, and Martynovka.
North Korean Troops in Russia?
Ukrainian and Western intelligence agencies allege that North Korea has sent around 10,000 troops to support Russia’s military efforts. This controversial claim has raised eyebrows internationally, further straining relations between the global powers involved in the Ukraine conflict.
When asked about casualties among the North Korean soldiers, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment, neither confirming nor denying the allegations.
