Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has criticized Peter Obi, his Labour Party counterpart, for allegedly “begging” Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, regarding the ongoing legal case involving human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi.
Obi’s Visit to Afe Babalola
Peter Obi recently visited Afe Babalola at his office within the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD). According to reports, the visit included discussions on Farotimi’s situation, who is currently facing charges of criminal defamation and cybercrime in both the Ekiti State Magistrates’ Court and the Federal High Court.
Social activist Moses Paul described Obi’s visit as a show of solidarity. Paul stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Obi traveled from Lagos to Ekiti, dedicating his day to meaningful engagements, including a meeting with Babalola and a visit to the correctional facility where Farotimi is being held.
Paul praised Obi for his commitment, noting that the discussions aimed to address challenges facing Farotimi and similar activists.
Sowore’s Condemnation
In response, Sowore, a vocal critic of judicial and political irregularities in Nigeria, condemned Obi’s actions in a post on X. He accused Obi of undermining the broader struggle for justice by seeking forgiveness for Farotimi rather than challenging the judicial system’s alleged corruption.
Sowore wrote:
“I condemn those who went to ‘beg’ Chief Afe Babalola today over the unjust detention and persecution of Dele Farotimi. The delegation led by Peter Obi did colossal injustice to the struggle to drain the swamp of judicial criminality in our country.
“Obi’s action is like forcing Rosa Parks to return to the back of the bus of racial injustice during the civil rights era in the US! The struggle continues!”
Farotimi’s Legal Troubles
Dele Farotimi, a prominent lawyer and member of the Obidient movement, faces multiple charges of defamation and cybercrime. These cases stem from allegations brought by Aare Afe Babalola, reportedly over content in Farotimi’s book Nigeria and Its Criminal Judicial System.
On Monday, the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti granted Farotimi bail with stringent conditions, including ₦50 million and a surety in like sum. His legal team is currently working to meet the bail requirements.
