TikToker Seaking Released from Kirikiri Prison After Fulfilling Bail Conditions

Nigerian TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo, widely known as Seaking, has regained his freedom from the Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre after meeting his bail conditions. His lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, confirmed the development on Monday through a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Effiong explained that Seaking’s delayed release was caused by the Christmas and New Year holidays, alongside administrative hurdles. In his post, he wrote, “We just departed the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, with TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo, alias Seaking.”

The TikToker’s ordeal began on December 20, 2024, when he was arrested by the Nigerian Police. He was later arraigned before the Ogba Magistrate Court in Lagos on December 23, 2024, where the police sought a 30-day remand over allegations of treason and cyberstalking related to a viral TikTok video critical of the police.

Effiong revealed that he and his legal team opposed the remand application, resulting in a courageous ruling by the magistrate, who granted Seaking bail instead. Despite the ruling, Seaking’s release was delayed by the holiday season and procedural challenges.

Effiong detailed the successful conclusion of the bail process, stating, “Today, the bail perfection process was concluded, and his release warrant signed.” He added that he, along with activist Omoyele Sowore and others, personally secured Seaking’s release from the facility.

The incident underscores the growing intersection of social media, free speech, and legal battles in Nigeria, with Seaking’s case highlighting both the risks and the resilience of individuals using digital platforms to voice their opinions.
